January 2015

The first couple of weeks of 2015 came whether I wanted them here or not, the bittersweet revelry of Christmas was gone, but the extra tamale or two (or ten) still remained.  This will be the year when I will find out if I can make a name for myself after all.  The certifications (RYT 200, CrossFit L-1) and schooling (BA, MA) are over; time to get real.  As I try to find a fit for my unique skill set, the training can’t wait and must increase.  Before the end of this year, at least one full triathlon (whatever distance) must be completed.  The previous blog featured every day of CrossFit WODs (Workout Of the Day) and became a little stale, so the New Year, new blog, Coma to Kona will only feature a smattering of WODs and more editorial meat.

I have started the year off with already a few RX workouts in CrossFit.  An RX workout is when the athlete performs the weight, rep scheme and time recommended, or the ‘prescribed’ workout.  All last year, my RX days were few and far between, but this year, it seems as though I’m fixin’ to tear it up!  My first RX WOD was on the 6th, when we had to do a Tabata shoulder press, back squat, another shoulder press and front squat.  A Tabata rep scheme is 20 seconds of work, 10 seconds of rest for a total of 8 intervals.  We had to do a Tabata for each movement and I ended up with 217 reps using men’s RX weight of 45lb.  The Tabata rep scheme was developed by Dr. Izumi Tabata, and full documentation and explanation can be found Here.

I had another day with an RX workout on the 16th after a strength session of 3 sets of two reps in the hang squat snatch, or as I like to call it, the F-ing hang squat snatch.  Probably my most difficult lift, so needless to say, my total weight for the three sets was 53lbs, 63lbs, and 73lbs once to a fail.  But, the WOD, oh the WOD, a 10 minute AMRAP (As Many Rounds As Possible) of 10 hanging knees-to-elbow and 10 walking lunges holding a 45lb plate overhead (35 for women).

After the quick RX performances in the first couple weeks of January, I took a little vacation to Anaheim, CA to take my daughter, little sister and wife to Disneyland!  While in Disneyland, I ran from the hotel to CrossFit Anaheim and dropped in on a WOD, you can see my Disney pictures on my facebook page, just look for the three albums from Disneyland and California Adventure.  I’ll check in sometime in the next week with some big news!  Until then.
